Kalam Jane v2 CE

The most controversial of them all

The Kalam Brand

Breaking down who they are

Kalam primarily operates on Taobao, a website for wholesale retailers in China. No one knows whether Kalam is an individual entity or a group so I will just be referring to Kalam as “they” or “them”.

Kalam is known notoriously for making exact, if not near an exact, copy of popular keyboard brands and models like Keycults, TGR, Dalco 959 Mini, Eclipse, Libra and even Unikorn. This list is non-exhaustive and I’m sure they will be continuing to produce more clones and pirated keyboards. Their keyboards are named aptly after the originals – Kalamcult, Kalam Jane, Kalco etc. Very punny of the community if you ask me.

Do a simple search of Kalam on reddit and you will find camps on both sides; one supporting clones and the other bashing them heavily. Like I mentioned on my Youtube channel, I have trouble understanding why someone will stand behind clones. I think I have ranted enough in my recent video so I will not go further.

The Build

where I show my cheekiness

For the keycap set, it is the GMK Laser Synthwave version, with a twist. I hesitate to put perfectly fine, firsthand GMK keycaps on it so I decided to do an experiment on this one, where I try to force-shine these keycaps. As you can see, there are some with fantastic results and some, well, less than ideal. If you guys are interested, I can do another video on that, but that’s for another day.

For the internals, I decided to go for an ironic theme. The keyboard is thoroughly hated for being a clone and having it built with banana split switches, which is one of the most social media-popular switch, is absolutely amusing.
